Rethinking Project Management for Decentralized Digital Product Development

Abstract
This paper examines the management of digital product development in a decentralized environment, emphasizing the adaptation of existing business modeling frameworks from centralized systems to align with the new paradigms introduced by decentralization. It argues that, while core principles of project management and product development remain relevant, traditional tools are grounded in assumptions of centralized control, linear value delivery and single-actor decision-making that are misaligned with decentralized settings. The study adopts a design science research methodology to analyse established frameworks, including the Value Proposition Canvas, Product/Market Fit Canvas, BCG Matrix and Business Model Canvas, and to derive a set of decentralized counterparts. A comparative analysis highlights how these adapted canvases foreground multi-stakeholder roles, governance mechanisms, trust channels and tokenized incentives as integral elements of product design and project coordination. The paper also outlines a flexible evaluation plan for applying and refining the proposed frameworks in real-world contexts. By positioning the decentralized canvases as heuristics rather than definitive standards, the study contributes to an emerging toolkit for aligning project management and digital product development practices with the requirements of decentralized e-business systems.
